New York, N.Y. Native Americans began smoking tobacco many centuries ago. They used it in rituals to heal and bind their tribe. When European explorers discovered the Americas in the late 15th century, they took tobacco back to Europe. Since then, tobacco or cigarettes have increased in popularity—a trend which continues today. Is smoking worth it?

Smoking mostly starts at a young age. Teenagers start to smoke because of peer pressure and to feel important. About 90% of adult smokers started as teenagers, estimates Dawn Titmus, an editor who writes frequently on this topic. In her article on New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s latest antismoking initiative, Danielle Tcholakian claims that 28,000 public high school students in NYC tried smoking for the first time in 2011. “Many teenagers take up smoking because they think it looks cool,” Titmus explains.

Teenagers’ grades drop drastically when they start to smoke. Why? A U.C.L.A. study found “a disturbing correlation.” Researchers say as a teen’s nicotine addiction increases, prefrontal cortex activity decreases, which suggest that smoking may affect brain function.

“Such an effect can influence the ability of youth to make rational decisions regarding their well-being, and that includes the decision to stop smoking,” said Edythe London, the study’s senior author.

Several studies indicate that smoking is also prevalent among low-income people (see this Gallup study, for example. In the book, The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton, examines two groups: low-income and the wealthy. Members of the lower-income group, the greasers, get into fights, take drugs and begin smoking at an early age. They also had no feelings for the importance of life. Is this a coincidence? Or does smoking affect judgment and one’s value of life?

Most people know the negative health effects of smoking, yet they continue. Smoking causes high blood pressure and stains the lungs and heart with black tar. It is responsible for 87 percent of lung cancer deaths and 30 percent of all cancer deaths in the United States, Titmus reports.

Man smoking. © World Health Organization.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco kills up to half of its users. The organization also estimates that tobacco kills at least 3 million people annually. Studies predict that if current trends continue, smoking could kill around 8 million people annually.

Smokers damage not only their health but also the health of those around them through second-hand smoke. As the BBC reported, passive smoking causes an estimated 600,000 deaths annually. Of particular concern are the estimated 165,000 children who die of smoke related respiratory infections.

As one can see, smoking has a tremendous impact on one’s health and well-being. Why do smokers choose to smoke when they know the effect that smoking has on their body? Do they feel no remorse for harming others who are negatively affected by their smoking?

These questions have answers, but each answer is specific to that person. Is it worth it to start smoking to impress your friends or to distinguish oneself? Regardless of the reason, smoking is not worth it. Period.

New York, N.Y. I recently attended Ticket2Bollywood (T2B) sponsored by Molecule Communications. I had the opportunity to interview its director Ajay Shrivastav and his sister and business partner Kiren.

Brother and sister Ajay and Kiren Shrivastav are opposites. He is the creative one and Kiren more the businesswoman operating Molecule Communications in Mumbai and Ajay is opening their first overseas branch in New York, where he has lived for twelve years involved with food and fashion – and now film. The siblings share the same passion but view different approaches.

Left to right: Anuraadha Tewari, and Kanika Chadda (Zee TV). Photo: Kabir Chopra.

“I am the opposite of Ajay,” Kiren told me. “Ajay wants to save the world first, but I believe I must first help myself and build our business. I want to build this company so strong we are in a position to help others,” she confided.

Ajay shared with me his own passion for bringing Indian entertainment to an international audience. I shared with him my passion about writing for an American audience so that they can better understand international phenomenon such as Bollywood. A match!

The audience during Q&A, asking the speakers about Bollywood. Photo: Kabir Chopra.

“It is no longer Bollywood vs. Hollywood,” Ajay explained to me at the two-day conference Ticket2Bollywood (T2B) his company sponsored in Manhattan’s Chelsea’s Dream Downtown Hotel. “Today, we have global entertainment,” he said. He plans to expand his T2B conference to London, Sydney, and Singapore.

Zoya Akhtar, Imtiaz Ali, and Anuraadha Tewari. Photo: Kabir Chopra.

“In the West, Bollywood is perceived as song, dance and weird colors,” Ajay said. “Trust me, Bollywood has travelled far beyond ‘song and dance.’” One factor he cited for this is India’s own growing middle class. “They are more in tune with global cinema,” he said.

However, Bollywood also resonates with audiences throughout the Developing World – especially in Asia and Africa. “A large part of the world is Third World, where there is a rooting for the underdog – the essence of Bollywood film,” Ajay elaborated.

Zoya Akhtar and Aarti Virani. Photo: Kabir Chopra.

Ajay has been excited about cinema for a long time, but only recently understood how best to build a bridge between Los Angeles and Mumbai, with a stopover in New York. His dream is to create a cross-cultural pollination between filmmakers around the globe.

Indian film producers and actors whom I have written about include Shah Rukh Khan, Mani Ratnam, and Mira Nair - as well as covering the New York Indian Film Festival for years. Ratnam is not well known globally but represents the status quo of Indian cinema. I attempted to the American audience several years ago on video. “Generation X will make the next generation of global cinema from India,” Ajay told me.

Ajay practices what he preaches. He is a vegetarian, which I wish I was but can’t, and volunteers at both NYU and Columbia helping others reach their goals and obtain their dreams.

New York, N.Y. Last fall, teen philanthropist Isaac J. Kassin was awarded our James Jay Dudley Luce Foundation’s coveted Luce Leader 2012 Award for his work in philanthropy, including his signature fund within our foundation. Accepting the award at a gala at the law firm of Skadden Arps, 17-year old Isaac made an impassioned speech with his nieces and nephews at his side on the need for giving back that was so on-target and mature, it left the audience stunned.

At the reception, my friend Jumaane Williams of Brooklyn presented Isaac with a proclamation from the New York City Council for his efforts in philanthropy, and Congressmember Carolyn B. Maloney, and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg sent letters of support. At the event, Isaac showcased a new initiative campaign he began this past summer, while at a pre-university business program at The Wharton School of Business with his two friends Amay Bhojani and Seal-Bin Han.

Isaac J. Kassin cited for leadership award at J. Luce Foundation event. Photo courtesy Isaac Kassin.
The mission of the J. Luce Foundation is supporting young global leadership, and their success in accomplishing this goal is illustrated in the philanthropic accomplishments of the student-run organization called The World Youth Initiative, founded by three students under the auspices and mentorship of the Foundation. Amay Bhojani, Seal-Bin Han, and Isaac J. Kassin founded this organization with a clear vision of the youth of today standing at the forefront of the battle to improve living standards in developing countries. Co-Founder Seal-Bin Han explains:

We like to say that The World Youth Initiative is a response to today’s problems, by tomorrow’s leaders. What we are trying to accomplish is the constructive empowerment of diverse youth from around the world, who come from different backgrounds, through the undertaking of projects that target prevalent issues in their countries. Through these projects, youth involved in the World Youth Initiative can gain crucial skills in leadership, communication, and management, while subsequently contributing to the global community.

Isaac J. Kassin speaking on philanthropy at Skadden Arp. Photo courtesy Isaac J. Kassin.
The projects range from a variety of causes, including microfinance, sustainable housing, and environmental conservation, among others. One of the many cool projects which financing is currently underway is the deliverance of a medical-supply and school-supply filled ambulance to a poor town in Haiti. Although these far-ranging projects that finance organizations like Orphans International Worldwide (OIWW) and Ronald McDonald House Charities illustrate WYI’s success, the initiative’s achievement is also measurable by the number of other young leaders they are actively training to become involved in philanthropy themselves.

I have passed the torch to the next generation – and this profound student-run organization has passed it even further. To this day, from the first event Isaac hosted with his friends, to The World Youth Initiative (WYI) projects that are currently being worked on today, young students have empowered over fifty children around the world, raised over $50,000 dollars for global non-profits, and impacted over ten countries.

World Youth Initiative founders Amay Bhojani, Seal-Bin Han, and Isaac Kassin. Photo: Isaac Kassin.
In addition, WYI continues to spread awareness about vital issues and the importance of altruism through the publication of articles in The Stewardship Report, the publication of a charity book (The Alphabet Kids Go to The Planetarium), and massive school wide presentations given by WYI members.

Dubai representative and co-founder Amay Bhojani explains the scale of the WYI:

Currently, we have around twenty regional branch managers who have begun their own philanthropic initiatives in their communities. Eleven of them are scattered around the U.S., while nine of them are in foreign countries. And they are all inspired to bring change. Think about that for a moment. It’s incredible.
We are experiencing a true movement. When youth see youth doing good, while enjoying the process, they are galvanized into action. When students form into groups of mutual interests and carry out activities with their peers on a charitable level, then their hobbies become inherently charitable and vice versa. It’s truly remarkable.

Isaac J. Kassin with the multicultural chorus at an “Alphabet Kids” event. Photo: J. Luce Foundation.
What has been financing this incredible organization? Sporting events, musical and theatrical concerts and shows, auctions and bake sales, mini-festivals, and social gatherings have been helping. However, the trick is all in the business model. Co-founder Isaac J. Kassin explains:

Kids run this place. That’s our magic sauce, our secret formula. You see, we live in a world where the need for youth to speak up and voice their thoughts is growing exponentially. We no longer live in a world of ageism. Kids are the future.

We are successful because kids are making all the decisions. Kids are organizing the events. Kids are managing the fundraising. Kids are making the presentations. We have teenagers authoring the business plans, and middle school kids putting together the venture strategies. If you come into our business meetings, you won’t see uptight uninterested individuals. You’ll see individuals with bed-times, individuals with high-school drama, and individuals who are university matriculates, who all have one thing in common: a passionate desire to bring change.

It’s all about kids here. They do what they love, and love it for the reasons they choose. That’s how you breed success. Allow the dreamers to dream, and give the impassioned independence, and their fervor will do the rest. That’s innovation.

Isaac J. Kassin with author in 2011. Photo courtesy of the J. Luce Foundation.
How old are these “kids” running this organization? Well, the oldest are the eighteen-year-old founders, but the youngest… this is where it gets interesting. Thirteen year-old Stephanie Franco describes her personal thoughts on charity work while working under The World Youth Initiative:

It feels good to help people who need help. And it’s cool knowing I can help. I mean, I’m thirteen so I’m very little but people let me do it because they see I really care and I want to. What makes it fun and easy to do is that I can give back in any way that I want.

Stephanie has personally raised thousands of dollars for those less fortunate. But it gets better. Under WYI, Stephanie Franco, along with her twin brother Jack Franco and her also thirteen-year-old cousin David Hedaya, co-founded The Charity Crew, a Brooklyn community organization that encourages children in elementary school to take initiative and learn about the importance of giving back.

Jack, David, and their friend Michael Catton have recently initiated the “Helping Our Community” Campaign, where they hope to triple their funds within months, and expand their brand amongst the community. As the head marketer and expansion strategist of The Charity Crew, David pitches ongoing projects to prospective donors and investors, while Jack, the financial officer of The Charity Crew, finds the most efficient and profitable way to conduct charity projects and manage donations. Currently, there are approximately two-dozen members in The Charity Crew all under the age of fourteen, who have raised over $10,000 together.

The Charity Crew assembles: David, Jack and Stephanie. Photo courtesy Isaac J. Kassin.
When we spotlight upcoming leaders, we look for young individuals of high moral character with strong convictions and the ability to communicate their ideas effectively with a sense of organization and administration. Amay, Bin, and Isaac, Stephanie, Jack, and David, and all the other inspiring kids in the WYI family, have all of the qualities and more.

Although we all come from different backgrounds, we are united in our dedication to new approaches to philanthropy. I am old enough and wise enough to realize that WYI is the future – and I am proud of the role our foundation has had, however small, in mentoring these young leaders towards that day.

New York, N.Y. Speaking broadly, we don’t appreciate Bollywood because we don’t understand it. We fail to grasp it not for any intellectual flaw, but for a major cultural one: we didn’t grow up in India. The biggest point to absorb to better get Bollywood is that Indian cinema is both sophisticated and unique. Films began to be made in India in the 1890’s, at the same time as film was being created in France.

Indian glamour: Actor Zoran Saher, Sneha Shah, and Kawas Bhasin. Photo: Kabir Chopra.

Bollywood has a bad rap in the U.S., known mostly for exaggerated song and dance. It is so much more, I have learned. Indian films are a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It is an integral part of Indian life. It has been described as a cinema that heals. It is also the largest film industry in the world.

In the past I have interviewed Indian film personalities actor Shah Rukh Khan and directorsMira Nair and Mani Ratnam, as well as reviewed specific Indian films such as Chittagong.

Indian director Anuraadha Tewari with actor Anand Kumar. Photo: Kabir Chopra.

Indian film is based on an iconography deeply rooted in the Indian soil with Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist and Christian references. Indian film is often a melodrama wrapped in joy and hope – celebrating the positivity of life. If an actor appears with a peacock feather, the Indian viewer understands a connection to Vishnu. With a snake around his neck, the native viewer thinks of Shiva. Such visual images and references are understood by Indian audiences.

Zoya Akhtar, Ajay Shrivastav, and Kiren Shrivastav. Photo: Kabir Chopra.

Last fall attended a wonderful two-day educational conference in New York titled Ticket2Bollywood (T2B), sponsored by Molecule Communications. The theme was ‘Bollywood: Beyond the Song and Dance.’ The event featured some of the most successful Indian filmmakers in the business

The roster of powerhouse Bollywood “household” names included:

Madhur Bhandarkar. National Award-winner for Best Director for and director of National Award-winning movies Chandni Bar (Tabu), Page 3, and Fashion (Priyanka Chopra). Bhandarkar has also released the most-awaited movie of the year, Heroine(Kareena Kapoor, Arjun Rampal).

Imtiaz Ali. Nominated for Best Director for recent super hit Rockstar (Ranbir Kapoor) and 2007’s Jab We Met (Shahid Kapur & Kareena Kapoor). Imtiaz also directed Love Aaj Kal and Socha Na Tha. Most recently, Imtiaz wrote the script for Cocktail (Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone).

Zoya Akhtar. FilmFare Award for Best Director for Zindagi Na Milege Dobara (Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar, Katrina Kaif). Also directed Luck by Chance (Konkana Sen Sharma) and writer of soon-to-be-released Taalash (Aamir Khan, Rani Mukherjee, and Kareena Kapoor). Zoya posited this thought: “Why do certain Indian films not work here in the U.S.? For me, this is very interesting to ponder.”

Anuraadha Tewari. Gold Medalist for Direction from Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, and scriptwriter of Fashion, Jail, and the more recent Heroine.

At event press-conference: Imtiaz Ali, Anuraadha Tewari, Zoya Akhtar. Photo: Kabir Chopra.“At a time in our film history when Bollywood and Indian independent movies are in the international media spotlight, whether it is at Cannes, Sundance, or at the Oscars,” says Molecule Communications Director Ajay Shrivastav, “we want to educate anyone who is interested in Bollywood about what it takes to make a film a ‘hit.” He elaborated:

Our films have gone beyond the Bollywood that portrayed couples ‘fake’ kissing surreptitiously behind trees or having arranged marriages because they had no choice. This young crop of directors and writers is capturing the ‘truest’ sense of what it means to grow up Indian in a global world, and we are thrilled to be presenting all of them together for the first time in the United States during the 100th year of Indian cinema.

My own growing appreciation for Bollywood is in direct proportion to my understanding. Many of my Asian friends don’t get why I laugh listening to Jeff Foxworthy’s Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Sure, Bollywood has its share of exaggerated song and dance. ‘Redneck’ humor can be as homophobic and misogynist as Rap. But all are so much more.I have enjoyed getting to know Shah Rukh Khan, Mira Nair and Mani Ratnam here in the U.S. and look forward to being in India again to learn even more about Indian cinema – and especially Bollywood. To try to better appreciate the rich iconography deeply rooted in the Indian soil. Luckily, as I will never be Indian, Bollywood continues to become more global.

New York, N.Y. The National Meningitis Association gala Give Kids a Shot, held recently at the New York Athletic Club, attracted people from all over the nation and from all walks of life – just as meningitis affects people from all walks of life. This fifth annual event was once again both an emotion-filled evening and a stellar success in aiding the fight against meningitis, a potentially vaccine-preventable disease.

Held in elegant ballrooms of the historic New York Athletic Club overlooking Central Park, hundreds of New York’s movers and shakers turned out to support the cause and to congratulate meningitis survivor and Para Olympic Gold Medalist Nick Springer, an Honorary Chair along with Ambassador and Mrs. John L. Loeb, Jr. The Ambassador is also known for his work with the FDR Conservancy and the new Four Freedoms Park on Roosevelt Island. I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet Kyle and Samantha Busch.

Athletes united: Para Olympic Gold Medalist Nick Springer and NASCAR driver Kyle Busch.
Photo: Rob Rich / www.SocietyAllure.com.
Guests mingled over cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while poring over the dazzling array of silent auction gifts from sparkling jewels to one-of-a kind fashions – and even a commemorative bottle of vodka with an LED message from supporter Richard Thomas shimmering across the bottle like a Broadway marquee.

Honorees Senator Jack Hart, Cindy Krejny, Samantha Busch, Kyle Busch, and Dr. William Schaffner.
Photo: Rob Rich / www.SocietyAllure.com.
NMA President Lynn Bozof and gala co-chairs Sara Herbert Galloway, Gary Springer and Lenore Cooney swirled through the room greeting friends and introducing this year’s honorees: Dr. William Schaffner, Health Achievement Award Honoree for his advocacy of the role of vaccines in protecting individual and community health; Cindy Krejny, Moms on Meningitis Outstanding Service Award for her tireless efforts to educate the public about meningitis and her work with Ohio lawmakers to mandate vaccination for college students; Massachusetts State Senator Jack Hart, who pushed the passage of a mandatory vaccination in his home state, with the Nancy Ford Springer Inspiration Award.

The future belongs to young leadership: NMA Teen Health Advocates Justin and Alana Galloway.
Photo: Tom Fitzgerald & Pam Deutchman / www.society-in-focus.com.
Sara Herbert-Galloway, last year’s Honoree and chair person for four years, recalled one year when almost everyone in the room, filled with hundreds of people, were calling friends and loved ones to ask if their children had been vaccinated once they learned and saw the devastating effects of meningococcal meningitis. Herbert-Galloway’s teenage children, Justin and Alana Galloway have been NMA’s Teen Health Advocate’s for three years, helping to raise awareness amongst their teenage peers that there is a vaccine. Sara thanked everyone involved, assuring them that their presence and word of mouth was helping to save countless lives.

Sara Herbert Galloway, the author, and the Mayor’s Deputy Counsel Norma Abbene.
Photo: Tom Fitzgerald & Pam Deutchman / www.society-in-focus.com.
NASCAR record-breaking winner Kyle Busch and his wife and partner Samantha – both young philanthropists – received the Community Leadership Award for the work of their Kyle Busch Foundation in support of programs that aid disabled and disadvantaged children around the country.

Barry Klarberg, vice-chair of the gala and founder of Monarch Wealth and Business Management, reminisced that he was Nick’s hockey coach when Nick was stricken with meningitis at the age of fourteen. Sara asked Barry to be involved with the NMA in 2007, they since became engaged and continue helping to raise awareness that there is a vaccine. As Barry Klarberg told me afterwards, “It’s nice to see that a world-class athlete like Kyle Busch and his wife Samantha provide exposure to the National Meningitis Association and its cause.”

Many of the young leaders only know actor Richard Thomas as one of NMA’s strongest supporters.
Photo: Rob Rich / www.SocietyAllure.com.
President Lynn Bozof gave moving testimony to the reason everyone was gathered – to prevent this dreaded disease by having pre-teens and teens vaccinated. Well known author and broadcast journalist Rita Cosby, filling in for longtime NMA host actor Richard Thomas, who was filming, kept the evening running smoothly as MC. Unexpectedly, Richard showed up on a break from shooting Law & Order SVU to personally congratulate the honorees and thank all the supporters.

Katlean de Monchy, Lorraine Cancro, Rita Cosby, Lynn Bozof, Sara Herbert-Galloway,and Tomaczek Bednarek.
Photo: Photo: Rob Rich / www.SocietyAllure.com.
I spoke with NMA president Lynn Bozof after the event. She told me:

There is nothing worse than losing your child. It is a grief that will never leave you. To then find out that your child didn’t need to die, that a simple vaccine could have saved his life, is something no family should endure. I am grateful to everyone who supported the National Meningitis Association at its annual fundraiser, “Give Kids A Shot.” The most important word – “vaccinate!”

The National Meningitis Association is a non-profit organization founded by parents of children who have died or live with long-term effects from meningococcal disease, also called bacterial meningitis. NMA works to protect families from the potentially devastating effects of this disease by educating the public and medical professionals about the disease and its prevention.

The NMA network also provides critical emotional support for families who have been affected by meningococcal disease. Additionally, NMA raises awareness of other preventable diseases and recommended vaccines across the lifespan.

Honorary chairs for the event were Ambassador and Mrs. John L. Loeb, Jr. and Para-Olympic Gold Medalist Nick Springer. Gala chairs were Lenore Cooney of the Cooney/Waters Group, Sara Herbert-Galloway and Gary Springer of Springer Associates PR. Vice Chairs included Joanna Goldenstein of KPMG, Barry Klarberg of Monarch Business & Wealth Management, Ulrika “Red” Nilsson of Redcircle International, and Heike Vogel of Arent Fox. Chairs of the successful silent auction were Matt Klarberg and Errol Rappaport.

Honorary Committee included Susan and Hon. James A. Baker III, Commissioner on Disabilities for the Mayor’s Office Victor Calise, Susan Sarandon, Liv Ullman, U.S. Senators from Maine Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, and a host of Congressional Representatives from across the U.S.

Committee members included the Mayor’s Deputy Counsel Norma Abbene, Lynn and Alan Bozof, PTSD expert Lorraine Cancro, Thomas Cook, broadcaster Rita Cosby, Citibank’s Ida Liu, entrepreneur Kevin McGovern, newscaster Frank Recchia, April Sandmeyer, Allison Strassberg, and Mr. and Mrs. John Wukovits III.

Two dedicated health experts: Dr. William Schaffner and Dr. Richard Bessa.
Photo: Photo: Rob Rich / www.SocietyAllure.com.
The prestigious Medical Committee includes Richard Besser, M.D. of ABC News; Paul Offit M.D. of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia; Nancy Snyderman, M.D. of NBC News; James C. Turner, M.D., Professor of Internal Medicine at University of Virginia, and Dr. Roger W. Yurt, Chief of Burn Surgery, N.Y. Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Also attending was Miss Teen USA 2012 Logan West, and teen star of Showtime’s “Shameless” Emma Kenney, as well as Bree Michael Warner, star of Nickelodeon’s “I Carly,” and NMA Teen Ambassadors, brother and sister Justin and Alana Galloway.

An Online Charity Buzz Auction featured an extraordinary array of one-of-a-kind experiences, art work and luxury items such as a week for twelve in an elegant Acapulco Cliffside villa, VIP tickets to the Justin Timberlake and Jay Z Concert at Yankee Stadium, exclusive NASCAR Sprint Cup VIP Experience for four, behind-the-scenes tour for four of Good Morning America with ABC News’ Dr. Richard Besser, VIP passes to Art Southampton, the premiere international contemporary art fair in the Hamptons, and much more.

Last fall I wrote about heaving learned about meningitis for the first time and my desire to have my teenage son vaccinated against this horrible disease. Since then, meningitis has passed into my own community — the gay community — and I received my own vaccine last fall. It makes no sense that anyone should be afflicted with this senseless tragedy that is preventable through inoculation. The gala’s theme resonates loudly in my head: Give Kids a Shot!

New York, N.Y. New York City has an annual event that educates the public on mental health that I believe is the finest in America. This symposium – and luncheon – is hosted by Fountain House each spring at The Pierre. This year, the event’s tenth, the topic was “Mental Illness and the Family: Relationships, Resilience, Recovery. The panelists were top-notch, and the thought-provoking remarks by the honoree, best-selling author Andrew Solomon, enthralled the nearly 600 guests. The event raised more than one million dollars to support Fountain House’s innovative mental health recovery programs.

Author Andrew Solomon, 2013 Fountain House Humanitarian Award recipient. Photo: PatrickMcMullan.com.
The panelists were Emmy Award-winning science journalist and author of A Lethal Inheritance Victoria Costello, child psychiatrist Robert J. Hilt, M.D., of the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital, and professor David Reiss, M.D., of the Child Study Center, Yale School of Medicine.Business journalist and TV anchor Consuelo Mack was the engaging and engaged emcee. The two doctors shed light on matters such as the question of nature vs. nurture in the development of mental illness and the importance of early intervention when symptoms first appear (the average delay between onset of symptoms and treatment is eight years).Panelist Victoria Costello drove home the make-or-break importance of timely treatment, speaking not only as a savvy researcher and writer but also as a mother. Her son, while in his teens, received a devastating diagnosis: paranoid schizophrenia. He was treated early in the course of his illness, and Victoria told the symposium audience with certitude, “Treatment works, and recovery is possible.” This is not merely a mantra: it was thrilling to hear that Victoria’s son, now in his early 30s, is “fully functioning, with a job, relationships – a life.”

Panelists Robert Hilt, M.D., Victoria Costello, and David Reiss, M.D.; program chair Andrea Roy and emcee Consuelo Mack. Photo: PatrickMcMullan.com.
One in four families is affected by mental illness, from depression and anxiety to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Serious mental illness affects 23 million people in the U.S. each year. Yet the denial is strong – too much stigma attached.

Two of my cousins have mental illness, but neither’s diagnosis was shared with the rest of the family. I remember one had a breakdown in college and took refuge in fundamentalist religion; the other made it into finance where he seems to have crashed and burned. Although they’re my age, I can no longer reach them by phone or Internet. The suicide of another family member was also never discussed.

Symposium founding chair Lorna Hyde Graev, Fountain House president Kenn Dudek and Board chair Nancy Farrell. Photo: Leslie Barbaro Photography.
The symposium highlighted the value of families as “first responders.” Fountain House president Kenn Dudek noted:

Our members who have families that stick with them are extremely lucky. For those who don’t have family connections, the Fountain House community is there. If members want to go to work or go to school, and if they need some extra help to achieve those goals, the community will be there to support them. That’s what Fountain House is about.

Fountain House delivers for New York, and beyond. The Fountain House model has been replicated in more than 300 locations in 30 countries and 32 states and currently serves more than 100,000 people with mental illness worldwide. “The House” offers its members free services for life in areas including employment, education, housing, and wellness – there is even a freestanding art gallery, Fountain Gallery, where I’ve seen striking works exhibited for sale by a band of gifted member-artists (link).

Fountain House, 425 West 47th Street, New York City. Photo: Courtesy Fountain House.
The education and employment facets of Fountain House got my attention, as I learned at the symposium that 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses begin by age 14 and 75% occur by age 24. That’s prime time for learning, and for charting a course for a life’s work – but what happens to those derailed by mental illness during this crucial period?

Among participants in the Fountain House education program, 77% successfully complete their studies, ranging from learning to read to obtaining a graduate degree. Nationally, the average success rate for students with mental illness is 32%.

Employment plays an important part in helping most of us to lead independent and substantial lives; Fountain House members have achieved an employment rate of 65%, while nationally, the average employment rate for people with serious mental illness is 15%.

Companies in New York that participate in the Fountain House employment program include Broadridge Financial Solutions, Cravath, Swaine & Moore, Dow Jones & Company, The Estée Lauder Companies, Morgan Stanley, New York Life, Publicis, Warner Music Group, and Young & Rubicam.

Alexandra Herzan, Podie Lynch, Anne Mai, Mary Pedersen, Kitty de Chazal, Carolyn MacKenzie, Lorna Hyde Graev, Patricia Begley.
Photo: Leslie Barbaro Photography.
The symposium’s founding chairs are Lorna Hyde Graev and Lynn Nicholas, Psy.D. This year’s event chairs were Patricia Begley, Kitty de Chazal, Alexandra Herzan, Podie Lynch, Carolyn MacKenzie, Anne Mai, and Mary Quick Pedersen. The corporate chair was Guy L. de Chazal, and Andrea Roy served as program chair.

Honorary chairs included dedicated mental health advocates such as the Honorable Patrick J. Kennedy and actress Glenn Close (both are past Fountain House honorees). Glenn, who has volunteered at Fountain House and established a visiting artists program at Fountain Gallery, sent this message to the event:

As someone who has witnessed, firsthand, the terrible suffering caused by mental illness, I am a deep believer in the power of the Fountain House model. To have a stigma-free, member-run, collegial sanctuary, where you are taught the skills that can lead to a life where work and independent living are a possibility, and to be part of a supportive and nurturing community that understands the everyday triumphs and challenges of living with mental illness, not only engenders life-affirming hope, but, indeed, changes and saves lives.

The Grand Ballroom of The Pierre. Nearly 600 guests were on hand to support Fountain House. Photo: Leslie Barbaro Photography.
In accepting the Fountain House Humanitarian Award, Andrew Solomon spoke of “vertical identities” passed down through the generations in contrast to “horizontal identities” acquired through peer groups, and he noted the unity that stigmatized people often find among those with similar challenges.

For his latest book, Far From the Tree: Parents, Children and the Search for Identity, Andrew interviewed a host of families coping with autism, deafness, Down syndrome, schizophrenia, transgender issues, and more. He recounted the acceptance and love he witnessed among many of these families as they navigated this rugged terrain, and his observation that “parenting is no sport for perfectionists” rang true; even “normal” families must negotiate differences. Perhaps it is “difference” that unites us all.

Andrew and I chatted after the program about our partners and children. He lectures at Weill-Cornell and shuttles between New York and London. His earlier book, The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression, won the 2001 National Book Award. Far From the Tree won the 2012 National Book Critics’ Circle Award for nonfiction and was lauded by the New York Times as a “generous, humane and compassionate book about what it means to be a parent.” Andrew is like that.

Jim Luce with Andrew Solomon at the Fountain House Symposium and Luncheon. Photo: Leslie Barbaro Photography.
I agree that it is important to shine a light into our family closets and publicly acknowledge what we find in them. The silence that shrouded mental illness in my own family has inspired me to stand up and be counted. Mark your calendars: next year’s Fountain House symposium will be held on May 5, 2014. I, for one, will be there.
